GAME NOTES: Jon Lester is suddenly the Sox’s new ace with Josh Beckett having given up a horrifying 10 home runs in his last three starts. This is a crucial series, as the outcome of the series will likely dictate the Rays’ playoff chances the rest of the way.

Love seeing those JBay home runs. If he’s on, Boston’s going to give other teams lots of trouble.
Mixed signals in August: 9 HR in 76 ABs but 26 Ks.
    Nice start to September though.

Seriously though. He’s never going to get the respect he deserves as a hitter, even if he wins the MVP. People will always call him soft. I still think he’s just got a quiet demeanor, which doesn’t mean he is careless.

Youkilis’ strike out in the 3rd inning may be the worst botched umpire call of the season behind the plate (copy and paste):
    brooksbaseball.dustinkikuchi.com/pfx/numlocation.php?xml=http://gd2.mlb.com/components/game/mlb/year_2009/month_09/day_01/gid_2009_09_01_bosmlb_tbamlb_1//pbp/pitchers/458567.xml&batterX=090901_195401&innings=yyyyyyyyy&s_type=3&sp_type=1&h_size=700&v_size=500
Strike 3 was a full foot off the plate.

Overreact much? Oki’s been one of the most consistent relievers we’ve had this year and just had a bad night. Thankfully Paps put out the fire and we got the win. Less complaining would be nice.
And who would you rather have as manager. Tito’s done a fantastic job this year as he has in years past. No issues from my end. A win against Tampa is one more step toward the Wild Card…

Having lived in Detroit during the 70s and 80s, Drew reminds me a bit of Lou Whitaker –in terms of demeanor. Lou always seemed a bit laid back and disconnected, whereas his double-play partner Alan Trammell was a diehard baseball guy. (Lou disappeared from the game after retiring; Tram’s been a coach and manager.)
In terms of production, Lou and Tram were virtually identical. But Tram got a lot more accolades and a lot more love from the fans.
In other words, I agree with Mike Silver’s take on Drew.

I don’t care what his #s say. I would never trust a LHP that throws a fastball between 81 to 87 MPH, straight over the top. And I hate Francoma because he is basically Grady Little. In fact think Little had more guts than Francoma. Little at least stood up to Manny, by not playing him. Larry Bowa would be better for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox did a great job getting Victor Martinez. Am I being positive or knocking Varitek?

I love how you name all managers that are no longer in charge of teams. There’s a reason why these guys are out of big league managing jobs. I’m not going to argue with you anymore on this since if you think Francona is the equivalent of Grady Little you’re pretty hopeless. All I will say is that Francona is the best manager to have been in Boston at least in the last 40 years and I might say in history. Perfect place, perfect time.

You’re right, numbers and success mean you’re a choke artist

Bowa’s a hot-head and has only had one good year managing. After that, the Phillies sucked for three years and he got canned. Philly is actually a similar town to Boston in how the media and the fans react to the manager. With a veteran team that is responsible and a media that jumps on the manager you don’t want a guy who’s going to blow his gasket every game.
Francona’s the consummate professional, plays the numbers right, and the players trust and respect him. In Boston particularly this is really important. The guy had won two World Series titles here, what more do you want?

I don’t want the fucker to be a player’s manager all the time. That’s what I want.

Because Tito being a players manager has sucked for the Red Sox so much over the last five years…lets look at the record:
    2004 – 98-64, WC, WS Champs
    2005 – 95-67, WC
    2006 – 86-76
    2007 – 96-66, DC, WS Champs
    2008 – 95-67, WC, ALCS runner up
    2009 – .588 W% and likely WC
What exactly is the problem here? You think screaming and throwing a tantrum at guys like Papi or Drew would get them to hit better. The fact that Tito was a players manager and didn’t bury rookies like Pedroia, Lester, Buchholz or Ellsbury is why we’re the team we are now.

Dude I don’t need you to point out how great Francoma has been, I know he’s been a winner. But guess what? I don’t like the way he manages. It is what it is, I’m not going to be dishonest about this. I also know chokeajima has great #s. But I don’t trust him in high pressure situations. Somehow he seems to choke from time to time. Or maybe he doesn’t choke, maybe the bottonline is that his fastball is way below average.
