New Poll Question: Should the Sox carry a third catcher in the postseason?

  • Yes, at the expense of a 11th pitcher
  • Yes, at the expense of a 5th OF
  • Yes, at the expense of Kotchman
  • No

My selection was ‘Yes, at the expense of Kotchman.’

The choice comes down to booting either Kotchman, Gathright or the third catcher. All signs point to Varitek having a significant role in the playoffs, and it’s important we be able to pinch-hit for ‘Tek without a problem and have flexibility behind the dish. Having a pinch-runner is crucial in October — that leaves Kotchman, as the Sox can’t get away with 10 pitchers.

As always, new poll is up to the right…vote away and argue it out in the comments.

Previous Poll Results:If the playoffs started now, who should be the Sox’s No. 4 starter?
I’m not surprised by this result. Wakefield is hobbled and simply can’t be relied on. Byrd was a great insurance policy and has given us innings, but doesn’t have the dominating ceiling Dice-K has, which counts for more in October.

Joey Gathright would be great. I want Kotchman too. Mientkiewicz, Roberts.

I’m probably going to get killed for saying this but, I wouldn’t be mad if Varitek pulls a muscle. That would get Gathright on the roster.

as frustrating as it seems it pays to remember that Varitek does provide intangibles and my big hope is that he can get some rest these next two weeks. what is not to love about v-Mart?! yet, if any problems… who can catch and who would you rather have as second catcher anyways — Kottaras? given our options Varitek is important to the club in the post-season. if we keep Lowrie in thefold we can have Youk at first if Lowell goes down as Lowrie can take 3rd…so … if it means no Kotchman to carry 3 catchers.. i am for it. now, if it were Kotsay and not Kotchman i might be singing a different tune…
