Yesterday, the Cincinnati Reds allowed Danny Richar, a second baseman, to become a free agent by outrighting him.
I’m here to say I want him as a member of the Red Sox. He became a Red last year in the Ken Griffey, Jr. trade (and Nick Masset). He hit .290/.330/.438 in Triple-A this year before undergoing labrum surgery in July.
Richar is 26 years old. He bats left-handed and saw significant time in the bigs with Chicago as a 24-year old, garning 187 at-bats of a .696 OPS. He’s seen spotty time since, never impressing. However, along with second base, he’s adequate at third. Short in a pinch.
Richar may not have hit at the big league level, but he’s hit well enough in Triple-A over the last three years (.870, .746, .767 OPS respectively) that I say he’s a great option for Triple-A, where he can serve as depth for backup infielder. You remember last year, when Lugo went down… and Lowrie went down? Nick Green was there. I’m advocating Richar as 2010’s Nick Green, because he’s younger, cost-controllable for years if we so choose with a bit more pop — and naturally, with a bit higher ceiling.
Sometimes it’s the little deals that keep the Sox in the thick of it.

I think they would prefer someone more solid defensively. He is prone to terrible throws and plenty of errors. I wouldn't mind a minor league deal though to see if he can work on his defense, but not holding my breath.
While Julio Lugo never quite figured out the throwing thing, by mid-season Nick Green had substantially reduced his throwing errors, and that cannon of an arm became a consistent asset … even as a pitcher. Fond memory. Danny-boy can work on that at Pawtucket, with Nick. To have both in reserve would insure a strong IF while the kids continue to develop at their pace. If he progresses, even if we can't use him, he has value as part of a cost=controlled trade package at age 26/27.
BTW, has there been any talk about what / how Green may have injured his back? i was a bit worried that he pitched those 2 (?) innings back in early Sept i think. Love this guy's hustle and drive and hope for him a very speedy and great recovery from surgery.
also, Alex Cora is available – and tho' he may not have such "upside" as future he seems to be very adept and a possible coach-in-the-making…
We are 100% getting Brett Myers, and I think we all know it. He's a pitcher with some success in the past who now has health issues, and brain issues, and is the type Theo likes to throw money at. After all, it's better to throw $5m at a headline story than $5m that will help the team, right?
Honestly I could see that happening and its a shame considering the dude beat his wife right outside Fenway. If we're going to make one of those signings this year it sure as hell better be Harden, higher ceiling proven AL track record. I also wanted the Sox to make a run at Hudson, but I'm glad he's sticking here in Atlanta.
Harden is highly likely to be able to squeeze a 3-year contract out of someone. That would be a mistake from Boston's perspective, and at that point, I would prefer Myers. I say this without consideration of his wife-beating issues.
If harden squeezed a 2/1 out of Theo at a reasonable base plus incentives, IMO that would be a good thing. He gets paid for games and innings. I can't see not getting full value, as his value is tied to his performance. He would be better than most SP signings. I'd like to see Theo work it out so he stays in Boston long term, incentivized every year.
I'm not sure Myers would get a good welcome in Boston, and apparantly his ability to handle fan harrassment and negative media (which define's Boston writers) is minimal. Not a good idea. There's harden, Bedard, Sheets, Duch, Mulder who are better ideas..
Hey sean o. You sure do have a way with words..
