26-year old Robert Manuel was claimed by Boston off waivers today. Manuel tossed 65.2 innings for Seattle’s Triple-A club this past season, amassing a 2.88 ERA with a 49/16 K/BB ratio (4.1 IP, 0 ER in the bigs for the Reds). He doesn’t possess great stuff, but is good depth for Triple-A. Boston has to restock Pawtucket given the departures of Fernando Cabrera, Marcus McBeth and other flotsam. The 40-man roster is now at 32, so the team had puh-lenty of space to bring him aboard. You could see Manuel tossing some junk innings in a Red Sox uniform at some point this coming season.

Another good pickup. He is younger than Cabrera (28/29) and McBeth (29) and I was a little surpised they let both go. They looked better than Manuel in AAA. Cabrera in 53IP had 51K/22BB ratio with 1.69era and 1.18whip. In his 5.1IP in Boston he had an 8k/4bb ratio and 1.1ERA. McBeth never got a chance to pitch, though he was called up, but in AAA he had 67IP with 66K/30BB, zero HR and a 2.69era and 1.09whip. I thought at least one of them would lose their older rookie jitters and become a good #7 or depth. I wonder why you call them flotsam?
Another late bloomer, Coello (RHP), just got to Pawtucket at age 24/25 & looks good following 67IP with 83K/34BB, 4HR, 2.05BA and .167BAA. He will match up well with 25/26 year old Richardson (LHP) who had just 10.2IP in AAA with 16K/2BB, 1HR, 1.69era/0.94whip. I wonder what button has to be pushed for such obvious talent to make it to the next level.
this guy is a soft thrower. i dont take those kinds of pitchers seriously.
But so many of them manage to do well, like Wake and this year Pedro and Pettitte. Following Beckett or Lester's heat, I imagine he could confuse hitters enough to successfully eat an inning and lead up to Bard or Rrami, who would then have an added advantage of speed following junk. IMO, every weapon is a good one if properly used.
