The Sox signed Scott Atchison from Japan this morning, returning the former major leaguer to North America. Atchison received a one-year contract, with two club options. Atchison last pitched in the MLB in 2007 for the Giants, posting a 4.11 ERA and 4.80 FIP in 30.2 innings.
Now 33, Atchison doesn’t seem to provide more than middle relief depth for the Sox, though he has had his moments as a major leaguer, including a career 4.13 FIP ERA in 68.0 innings, including 70 strikeouts and 25 walks.
In his last foray into the MLB, Atchison featured a 90-91 mph fastball, while mixing in a slider, curve, and occasional change up.

I am a bit surprised, but it represents such short money he shouldn't be considered guaranteed a spot. He'll fight for one.
There is a pattern happening. It seems like players are taking a lot less $ to play for the Red Sox.
The kind of player Sox value the most: mediocre.
C'mon, MAG, it's depth. He and Manuel + Richardson, Coello + Bowden, Tazawa = depth with potentially high upsides. He's signed for 1+2 at just above league minimum. He will fit well with Tazawa in AAA and Oki and Daisuke at Fenway. He not only had a 1.70 in 90IP in 75G in Hanshin, his rookie year in Seattle was pretty good with 3.52 and 36K inin 30.2IP and a 1.2whip. He then got hurt and seemingly fell apart, and redeemed himself in Japan with an excellent line which was, importantly, consistent. Late bloomer? AAAA? We won't know for a few months, but the high side is there. Rest assured that Soriano/Gonzalez/Bell/etc. will replace Wagner. Are you also looking forward to seeing if Dustin Richardson and Robert Coello are as good as they seem?
Heard Theo say that a few years ago they tried to sign Scott, knowing that he would recover. He chose Japan instead and got his act together over there. He was always on their radar. Good to know. Also heard the Marlins have made Anibal Sanchez available for a trade. He's about to make some $$, I guess. Would love to have him back, get him into the shoulder program.
good signing, but we need big signings as well as small smart ones
