Wow…that was an unexpected flurry of activity. Join Paul and I as we break down the day during which the 2010 Boston Red Sox started to take serious shape.

Are the Red Sox better this year than they were last season? Are they better than the Yankees? What does this mean for Matt Holliday and Jason Bay? or Josh Beckett or Adrian Gonzalez? So many answers today, yet as many questions.

Thankfully we have Fire Brand contributor Troy Patterson on the line to help us dig into the action for the day.

All that and more on this episode of Fireside Chats.

Thanks for listening!

Good Show. Agree that Lackey is a good signing, and the reasons you gave for 5 years + more $$ than expected ring a bell. He could look like a bargain in a couple of years, he's off the market, a range has been set for Josh's extension which, if Halladay took $20M, is similar to Lackey's. I hope Troy's wrong about Josh's prognosis with the Sox, and hope he is right about AGon (I've been beating the drum for AGon for nearly a year) as this rotation is fantastic with Buchholz in it.

With Youk or Beltre on 3b plus Scutaro & Cameron/Hermida, those left side holes are well and truly plugged. I'm more optimistic than you are about Kotchman's offense at 1b. When he was traded for Teixeira, he was considered just that good, and had come off a terrific 2007 at age 24. Since 2008 he's been on the Angels, Braves, Red Sox and hasn't had much playing time and is wondering what happened.. Why would it be a surprise for him to put up a .296/.372/.367 year with, at Fenway and 15-20/80/70 with 40BB/40K??? This would approximate Adrian Beltre's production, and not block AGon or Lars or Rizzo down the road. It's either AGon (so long great prospects) or Beltre (I'm OK with this other than blocking prospects through 2012-13.) or Kotchman, who may be the best short term, and maybe long term, answer. At the very least, by July he is a valuable trade chip.

IMO, the loss of HR/RBI/R from J.Bay will be more than made up by full years from Victor, Papi, Scutaro, Lowrie, Hermida plus Cameron. Add in Youk, Pedroia, JD, Ells, Kotchman, and a rested Tek, and this is still a 200HR/high OBP team, except with remarkable defense. Hope you get the Beltre broadcast done while he is still news. Thanks.

LIke the Lackey signing. Cameron is a nervous Theo move. He knew after signing Lackey that Bay was off the table so he overpaid for an aging weak bat to play left.

We are having some feed issues at the moment. You could download from (http://redsoxtimes.com/podcast/68_12_14_09_firesi... here and import to iTunes to transfer to an MP3 player or iPod, etc while we troubleshoot if needed. I'll post when this has been figured out!
