PLAYER OF THE DAY
Completely by accident, the morbidness continues  for a third with one of the more tragic stories in Boston sports history.  On this day in 1954, Harry Agganis made his major-league debut with the Red Sox.  Agganis was already a legend in Boston, playing quarterback for Boston University from 1948-49 and 1951-52.  He was chosen in the 1952 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns but was lured to the Red Sox by owner Tom Yawkey’s $35,000 contract offer.  Agganis was just beginning his promising career when he died of a pulmonary on June 27, 1955.
