GAME NOTES

Today could be a historic day at Safeco field. Of course, that’s what we’ve said the last three times Tim Wakefield has started. The previous attempts haven’t been in Seattle, but this afternoon, Wakefield will attempt to reach 200 wins for the fourth time. He’s pitched well in every attempt, never allowing more than three earned runs, but the vaunted offense behind him hasn’t done their job. His last effort came against Minnesota. He gave up three earned runs in seven innings, striking out four and walking none. Although the Sox ultimately won that game, Wakefield was left with another no-decision, something he looks to change today.

Rookie Charlie Furbush, acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline for Doug Fister, starts for Seattle. The lefty has made three starts for the Mariners, and has been, well, he’s never gone more than five innings. He was lit up in his last start, giving up six earned runs in only four innings of work against the Rangers. He walked four and struck out no one. Overall, he’s gone 1-1 for Seattle in three appearances. He’s left-handed so Josh Reddick is on the bench again. Darnell McDonald starts in right in his place. Jed Lowrie starts at short stop against the southpaw, he’ll bat sixth. Kevin Youkilis is back in the lineup after missing two games with a sore back.
