The first flurry of moves made by new GM Ben Cherington came yesterday. He acquired some much needed bullpen depth, but sent away a player once seen as being a potential mainstay in the Sox’ lineup. Almost immediately after the Melancon for Lowire and Weiland deal, Nick Punto was brought aboard on a two-year deal to serve as the team’s new super utility backup.
