Should the Red Sox finish adding to their starting pitching? Boston was reportedly casing Javier Vazquez’s starts in Puerto Rico, as the right-hander is contemplating returning to to the majors after a year off. That begs the question: should Boston add another pitcher?
The rotation is currently set to be Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, Ryan Dempster, Felix Doubront and John Lackey. If another starter is added, that seems to point to a trade- – probably Doubront — happening. Let’s hear your thoughts. Yea or nay to another pitcher?
The previous poll questioned who has been the best addition to the Red Sox to date, including Mike Napoli among that crew. The answer ended up not being a player, with manager John Farrell grabbing the award. Given Farrell will make the biggest and longest-lasting impact, that makes sense. Joel Hanrahan actually had a strong showing, finishing second on the list. I like the love for Koji Uehara, but think people are overlooking David Ross. And poor Jonny Gomes only got one vote. Here are the results:
Who has been the best Red Sox pickup thus far?
- John Farrell (31%, 82 Votes)
- Joel Hanrahan (14%, 37 Votes)
- Ryan Dempster (13%, 35 Votes)
- Koji Uehara (13%, 33 Votes)
- Stephen Drew (12%, 31 Votes)
- Mike Napoli (6%, 17 Votes)
- David Ross (6%, 15 Votes)
- Shane Victorino (5%, 12 Votes)
- Jonny Gomes (0%, 1 Votes)

Dereck low e can do both
The issue is simply SP depth. Ben has to ignore the talking heads and trust Lester, Buck, Lackey, Doubront and Dempster; and the #6,7,8,9,10,11,12 depth that is Morales, Acevas, DLR, Hernandez, Wright, Webster, Workman that should be ready between April and August. In this case the rotation and depth are set. However, if the FO and Farrell are concerned, now, about Lackey's command in April, or Morales' shoulder, or Doubie's conditioning, then experienced SP depth is needed, and Vasquez may be the best option. IMO Doubront and Javy aren't mutually exclusive (nor are Bailey and Hanrahan.)
