All Hail The Kings
Red Sox Nation is up on their feet after back-to-back come-from-behind victories over the dreaded, hated, insufferable evil empire that is the New York Yankees. Buy your way to a World Series, will you? Not if the Bo Sox boys have anything to say it about. Revenge on the Tampa Bay “please don’t call us Devil” Rays can wait. Right now the juice tastes sweet and the pinstriped pretty boys are spittin’ mad.
Every time these two clubs meet up in the world’s largest rivalry, the competition is more like a roulette game and less like a chess match. The winner rides a hot streak. It’s all good and well, after the fact, but while Beckett is struggling and the Sox’s lineup is walking to the plate like George Romero characters, it takes a true fan to not march into the Yankees’ dugout and pimp-slap Joe Girardi on pure principle. In a lawless world, that would be our mantra: “If the Sox don’t win, we all jump in!”
The Red Sox are on a tear, winning on pure heart and resilience. And though it’s not surprising to any baseball fans around the world, it still sends a chill up the Nation’s spine every time the Yanks are forced to assume the position and take the perp walk of shame out of Fenway. We’re not an in-your-face people by nature; the snot-flinging, diatribe-ready rude Yorkers made us this way.
Needless to say, beating the Yankees is the one accomplish that will suffice throughout the entire regular season. And if the uber-idiots can muster enough wins to take the division or the wild card and fate hands us (and Joe Buck) an opportunity to bask in the hot rivalry’s glow, we’ll be all too grateful of the chance to boo our despicable opponents once more. But don’t call us jaded. We’re simply ready to answer the call.
On the real side of things, the Red Sox have a long road ahead of them this season. Tampa Bay is struggling at the moment, but their bats can get hot in a hurry. Toronto is playing some seriously inspired baseball. Baltimore is looking better. And the Yankees, well, their purchase power practically ensures them a position to make a solid run in the home stretch. And all of this is just the AL East! The Mariners, Rangers, White Sox and Tigers are all looking good. A wild card may be out of the question.
It’s tough to think about the fall when summer hasn’t even started… well, unless you’re Al Gore. Then it’s always summer. But that’s another story entirely. Right now we can relish the victory over the Yanks and hope this series at Fenway is a precursor of the rest of the season. The remaining series’ will undoubtedly play out with a lucky winning streak (if the Yanks win, that is! Damn bloop hits!), but we wouldn’t trade a minute of it.
