David Pauley dealt to the Orioles for reliever, Randor Bierd

Written on January 19th, 2009 by Ryne Crabb39413 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/01/19/david-pauley-dealt-to-the-orioles-for-reliever-randor-bierd.htmlDavid+Pauley+dealt+to+the+Orioles+for+reliever%2C+Randor+Bierd2009-01-19+18%3A53%3A57Ryne+Crabb

Without a spot for him on the 40-man roster after the signings of Takashi Saito and John Smoltz, David Pauley had found himself designated for assignment. Today, the Red Sox found a way to unearth a little value for him picking up AA reliever Randor Bierd from the Baltimore Orioles.

Per MASN, Pauley will compete for the fifth spot in the Orioles rotation.
Bierd, a 24 year old right hander from the Dominican Republic was drafted in 2003 by the Detroit Tigers and claimed last season by the Orioles in the Rule 5 draft. He was outrighted to AAA Norfolk after a 29 games with the Birds last season where he posted an 0-2 record, with a 4.91 ERA and 25 strike outs in 36.2 innings pitched.

David Pauley designated for assignment

Written on January 13th, 2009 by Evan Brunell39298 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/01/13/david-pauley-designated-for-assignment.htmlDavid+Pauley+designated+for+assignment2009-01-13+20%3A04%3A05Evan+Brunell

David Pauley was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man spot. The Red Sox currently now have a full 40-man roster with the addition of John Smoltz and Takashi Saito.

Over three years, Pauley had a 9.53 ERA in the major leagues but sacked up big time with a thrilling assignment at Yankee Stadium in 2006. Sean O’s reaction to that tough loss: “Pauley, the guy almost everyone thought would suck, throws an absolute
gem, and loses because goddamn Seanez walks in Giambi? And then, when
we’re about to tie it up, a home run gets taken away by Melky Freaking
Cabrera?”

Only 25, Pauley could have a decent major league career ahead of him but with his poor fastball, is better suited to the National League. He stands a good chance of clearing waivers and being outrighted to Pawtucket, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Pauley’s former team, the San Diego Padres, claim him.
