BoSox AFL Update

Written on November 3rd, 2009 by Mike Silver63252 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/11/03/bosox-afl-update.htmlBoSox+AFL+Update2009-11-03+12%3A36%3A31Mike+Silver
NHL Entry Draft Day 1

With the conclusion of every major league season comes the beginning of the second season of “minor” leagues in baseball – the Winter Leagues. This 2009 off-season, the Sox have placed 17 promising prospects across four leagues, including some of the most exciting names in the organization, such as Casey Kelly, Ryan Kalish, Jose Iglesias, and Yamiaco Navarro.

The Winter Leagues are one of the more interesting annual rituals of the MLB, aside from maybe the Rule 5 Draft, as every team in baseball pours their most highly touted prospects into one pool where they duke it out for organizational supremacy.

The Science of Selling Felix, A-Gon Short

MLB-Home Run Derby

In our versions of an offseason blueprint the Red Sox could follow (1, 2, 3) one topic that came up fairly often was how realistic or unrealistic our proposed trade packages were for certain players. Let’s recap:

Mike Lowell, Casey Kotchman, Clay Buchholz and key minor league pieces (defined as anyone sans Kelly, numbering two) for Felix Hernandez.

Money comment: Getting King Felix would be nice, but you are crazy thinking Seattle would have any interest in picking up Lowell or Kotchman. Why would they pick up $16+ in salaries? Lowell is going nowhere unless we pay his salary, which is crazy. – MEe

Clay Buchholz, Lars Anderson, Manny Delcarmen, Michael Bowden, two “second-tier” prospects to San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez.

Money comment: Delcarmen is a stiff. Bowden is a stiff. Anderson has done NOTHING in the minor leagues. Clay Buccholz has major league stuff but has yet to prove himself for an entire season. For this you’ll get one of the best young power hitters in the game? I think not!! - Nick

If our proposed deals are not up to snuff, that’s not good. Let’s try to figure out what a proposed deal could, should be.

A Year Removed from the Shortstop Logjam

Written on February 16th, 2009 by Daniel Rathman39951 Commenthttp://firebrandal.com/2009/02/16/a-year-removed-from-the-shortstop-logjam.htmlA+Year+Removed+from+the+Shortstop+Logjam2009-02-16+13%3A00%3A00Daniel+Rathman

Twelve months ago, I was eagerly looking forward to today because it would be then that the logjam at the shortstop position in the low-minors could be resolved. There were five guys: Oscar Tejeda, Yamaico Navarro, Kris Negron, Will Middlebrooks, and Ryan Dent; that could potentially play the position down the road. Luckily, not all five guys were on the same team, but it sure was something to worry about had they all progressed at the same rate. There were certainly plenty of variables that typically unscrew these logjams, such as injuries, lack of production, etc. To quote Sox Director of Player Development Mike Hazen, “things like these will work themselves out, we just have to make sure to get everybody equal opportunity”.

Well, Mike was right. Oscar spent the first few weeks in Extended Spring Training with arm issues and is more suited for third base. Navarro played very well and is now a top ten prospect. Negron struggled to make consistent contact in Greenville before becoming a product of Clear Channel Stadium in Lancaster. Middlebrooks was never really given a shot at shortstop and is handling third base well. And finally, Dent has failed to make much contact and is more than likely going to switch to either second base or center field. That leaves Navarro as the only one who will be playing the majority of his time at the shortstop position.

Sox Top 10 Prospects

Written on November 14th, 2008 by Evan Brunell36677 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2008/11/14/sox-top-10-prospects.htmlSox+Top+10+Prospects2008-11-14+18%3A38%3A36Evan+Brunell

Baseball America came out with the Top 10 prospects. Lars Anderson is unsurprisingly ranked first, but what’s with leaving Will Middlebrooks off? A surprise: pitcher Nick Hagadone third. Casey Kelly and Ryan Westmoreland, despite lack of experience, rank high.
