After struggling to score runs — let alone win games — the Pawtucket Red Sox ended one of the more painful droughts in franchise history.
The PawSox entered Saturday’s game against the Buffalo Bisons having lost five of last seven games and having been blanked in three consecutive games.
Maybe the Pawtucket Red Sox lost the battle Friday night in their home opener against the Leigh Valley Iron Pigs.
But because knuckleballer Charlie Zink and reliever Billy Traber gave them nine innings, the PawSox may win the war – the war being the remainder of a six-game homestand.
In some organizations, highly-rated prospects like first baseman Lars Anderson, outfielder Josh Reddick, pitcher Nick Hagadone and infielder Oscar Tejada might open at Triple A.
Because the Pawtucket Red Sox have so much depth and talent, players of this caliber have been assigned to teams farther down the minor league ladder.

Charlie Zink, the knuckleballer signed in 2002 after a recommendation from Luis Tiant, has been designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox. Zink, who won 34 games over the past four seasons for Pawtucket and Portland, had his major league debut in 2008, giving up eight earned runs in just four and third innings.
It has long been speculated that Zink, 28, would be in the starting rotation for most teams and was only held back in Boston by Tim Wakefield. Not even Bernie Madoff could talk Boston’s front office into start two knuckleballers in the rotation. Fire Brand wishes Zink the best, and hopes he gets an opportunity to prove himself with another team very soon. Preferably outside the AL East.
Maybe the confines in which the Pawtucket Red Sox played this season weren’t baseball’s equivalent of a perfect world. But they were close.
