arThe Yankees claimed Chris Carter to tweak their cross-town rivals and intra-division rivals, directly benefiting from forcing the Sox to do a little 40-man roster manuevering in September. What I’m more miffed about is the Yankees effectively shuttering Chris Carter’s career.
Yesterday, first baseman Jeff Bailey suffered a high-ankle strain trying to make a play on Brad Penny’s acrobatic flip to first base Saturday. He’s likely to hit the disabled list, a loss given that the Sox are about to face two left-handed pitchers.
How can the Red Sox replace Bailey against left-handed starters?
After struggling to score runs — let alone win games — the Pawtucket Red Sox ended one of the more painful droughts in franchise history.
The PawSox entered Saturday’s game against the Buffalo Bisons having lost five of last seven games and having been blanked in three consecutive games.
If Lowell goes down, Youk can shift to third and David Ortiz and Chris Carter can share the 1B/DH spots. Or even Rocco could DH at times.
If Daisuke suffers from “arm fatigue.” Which could also be labeled as “we are being careful with him because of the the WBC.” Then Justin Masterson can shift from the pen to the rotation.
But Theo has built a team that can handle suspensions, injuries, performance issues, more than just about any team in the game of baseball.
And the organization as a whole has built a farm system that has the players to either be quality Major Leaguers, fill temporary holes, or be traded to address any of these “holes.”

Nick Green and Chris Carter are your final members of the 2009 Opening Day Boston Red Sox, Sean McAdams reports. Carter grabs the “Kotsay spot” and should see time at first and DH until Kotsay returns in May. Green will back up the infield until Julio Lugo returns a week or two into the season.
Things can change if the Red Sox make an acqusition this week. The Sox are known to like Jeff Keppinger, who is available. If they do acquire Keppinger, you would have to think Lugo will not return at all.
With JD Drew, Jason Bay, and Jacoby Ellsbury all under contract for 2009, the Red Sox starting outfield is set in stone before pitchers and catchers report. Unless you consider Jonathan Van Every, Chris Carter, or Jeff Bailey a long-term solution, the team still needs to acquire a fourth outfielder via free agency or trade. Needing to acquire a fourth outfielder may seem like an exercise in gluttony, but let’s be candid about our current situation. JD Drew has played 135 games or less seven times in his ten year career and the Red Sox can afford to pay above market on some spare parts to sit the bench.
