Sox’ Expiring Contracts

Written on October 13th, 2009 by Mike Silver615317 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/10/13/sox-expiring-contracts.htmlSox%27+Expiring+Contracts2009-10-13+11%3A20%3A00Mike+Silver
Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers.

As is customary at the conclusion of every MLB season, the Boston Red Sox are now the proud holders of a number of expiring contracts and team options.

For a team swept in the opening round of the playoffs, there is often the urge to spend big on the free agent market in an attempt to show the fans that they are committed to winning after a badly failed run.

However, this may not be the case with the 2010 Sox, as they are retaining most of their starting roster – many at excellent prices for their skill level (i.e. Lester for $3.75 million in 2010) – with significant questions at left field and shortstop only.

Now, with the end of the season upon us and free agency approaching, who will the Sox choose to keep around?

Pitcher #11: Byrd Over Delcarmen

Written on October 8th, 2009 by Mike Silver61054 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/10/08/pitcher-11-byrd-over-delcarmen.htmlPitcher+%2311%3A+Byrd+Over+Delcarmen2009-10-08+21%3A04%3A02Mike+Silver

With the Red Sox ALDS roster now available to the reading public, Tito has ended any speculation as to whether Manny Delcarmen would be carried over into the Division Series and postseason. Manny struggled for much of the latter part of the season, though his lousy September (7 IP, 14.14 ERA, 8 BB, 10 K, 4 HR) was undoubtedly the final nail in the coffin for what was at first a very promising year.

KC 5, BOS 1: Byrd Gets His Wings Clipped In First

Written on September 23rd, 2009 by Jake DiGregorio51401 Commenthttp://firebrandal.com/2009/09/23/kc-5-bos-1-byrd-gets-his-wings-clipped-in-first.htmlKC+5%2C+BOS+1%3A+Byrd+Gets+His+Wings+Clipped+In+First2009-09-23+04%3A28%3A15Jake+DiGregorio

A five run first inning by the Kansas City Royals did the Red Sox in last night, as the boys from Boston drop the second game of a four game series, 5-1.

Paul Byrd shook off the missteps of the first inning and went on to throw 6.2 innings, but the damage was already done, as Zack Greinke held off the Boston bats with another dominating performance.

9/22: Byrd tries to defeat Greinke

GAME NOTES: The former Royal, Paul Byrd, will take on the likely Cy Young winner. Zach Grienke is basically the only good thing the Royals have going for them at the moment. x

BOS 9, LAA 8: A-Gonz and Done It Again

It’s not everyday that Red Sox fans get to see Alex Gonzalez at the bottom of a walk-off pig-pile. It’s even more rare to see him take a walk. But last night, he did both, leading the Red Sox past the Los Angeles Angels, 9-8.

Both Paul Byrd and Angels’ starter Joe Saunders pitched some uninspired baseball, but it was the quick feet and quick thinking of the Red Sox that brought home the seventh win in eight days for Boston.

9/16: The Byrd flies with the Angels

GAME NOTES: Paul Byrd makes what could be his final start for the Red Sox, as Tim Wakefield is due back shortly. Byrd has been a nice arm for the Sox so far. Can he shut down that offense?

Matsuzaka to make return Tuesday, Byrd tucks wings in

Written on September 12th, 2009 by Evan Brunell51015 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/09/12/matsuzaka-to-make-return-tuesday-byrd-tucks-wings-in.htmlMatsuzaka+to+make+return+Tuesday%2C+Byrd+tucks+wings+in2009-09-12+11%3A00%3A00Evan+Brunell

Last night, Amalie Benjamin tweeted that Daisuke Matsuzaka was going to make his return to the Sox rotation on Tuesday. This means that Paul Byrd is suddenly out of a rotation spot, assuming Tim Wakefield makes his scheduled start next weekend in Baltimore. Check out how the weekend stacks up and when Byrd will probably start.

9/9: The Berken Byrd

Written on September 9th, 2009 by Evan Brunell50897 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/09/09/99-the-berken-byrd.html9%2F9%3A+The+Berken+Byrd2009-09-09+23%3A00%3A00Evan+Brunell

How’s that for a play on words? Except for the whole birds being able to bark thing, of course. Byrd threw a gem against Toronto and followed it up with a stinker against Chicago. What’s he got in store for Baltimore? On the other side, Berken has a 6.07 ERA an 4-11 record. These are the types of games we should win. Will we?

9/4: Two Sox go at it

Written on September 4th, 2009 by Evan Brunell50829 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/09/04/94-two-sox-go-at-it.html9%2F4%3A+Two+Sox+go+at+it2009-09-04+22%3A26%3A34Evan+Brunell

Paul Byrd goes against Freddy Garcia; two pitchers both returning from the dead. Garcia held the Yankees to three runs in six innings last time out, so he may be rounding into form. The ChiSox certainly aren’t; they’re collapsing. A sweep would be nice; I still haven’t given up hope for the division title.
