Do the Red Sox have another curse on their hands? Two separate Boston players have had bouts with cancer. David Ortiz had heart problems a few years ago. (Click ‘Read More’ below or click the headline to see the rest of the article.)
The Red Sox’s bullpen search has taken on an interesting look these days.
With Tim Wakefield virtually certain to open the season as No. 5 starter and Dice-K on the shelf, there are two spots open. The favorites are Boof Bonser and Brian Shouse (the latter serving as LOOGY), but there are doubts about both, apparently.
The Red Sox are talking to Alan Embree about a return as they are reportedly unhappy with Shouse’s production.
As for Bonser, word is that the Diamondbacks and Cubs are both interested in acquiring him. Bonser is a starter, but Boston is trying him out as a reliever, where it is thought he will have more success. He would also function as a longman. There’s no indication the Red Sox are interested in dealing him, but it’s possible the Sox would do so given a nice return. They have Scott Atchinson pushing Bonser for a bullpen spot.
That said, pitching depth is a canard. It’s more likely that Bonser stays and Atchinson goes to Triple-A than it is the Boof being traded.
An idea I’m mad I didn’t think to use as I was looking more at home run power and distance, but Jeff Zimmerman at Beyond the Boxscore takes a look [...]
Earlier today, the Red Sox front office released a statement reporting that top prospect Ryan Westmoreland will undergo surgery to correct a cavernous malformation.
A cavernous malformation is a group of dilated blood vessels in the brain, often diagnosed following headaches in the patient. However, many people can have cavernous malformations without presenting symptoms.
Remarked General Manager Theo Epstein,
“The entire Red Sox organization stands in support of Ryan as he courageously deals with this issue. Ryan is a remarkable kid and a talented player, and we understand that many will be concerned about his health. He is getting the best medical attention the world has to offer, and we will have more information soon. Until then — out of respect for Ryan’s privacy and at the request of the Westmoreland family — we will not have any further comment.”
Everyone here at FireBrand and all over Red Sox Nation is pulling for a speedy recovery for Ryan and we wish him the best.
At the moment, there is no word as to when he will return to the field.
On the heels of today’s discussion, I ended up finding this link via Tom Tango’s blog.

During an interview yesterday J.D. Drew made interesting comments about his future with the Red Sox and in baseball. While the league has shifted and older players are being [...]
Baseball America has released the top 100 prospect list today and after getting hammered for an hour or so with traffic I was finally able to view the list. This list along with John Sickels at MinorLeagueBall.com are my favorite and most trusted lists.
The Red Sox saw four players crack the list this year with none in the top 20.
- 21 – Ryan Westmoreland
- 24 – Casey Kelly
- 75 – Josh Reddick
- 87 – Lars Anderson
Last week I answered some questions for Scott Wallace at Mets Paradise. You can check them out today. There was some good questions about the roster and a few on front office and the farm system. Of course there was also the obligatory question about Jason Bay and why the Red Sox let him go. With the Mets looking like a .500 team this year I’m glad he didn’t ask me for more thoughts on them.
I have some very exciting news, which you’ve probably already gleaned from the headline. I’ll be joining NESN.com to write New England sports, primarily during nights. I’m very excited about this opportunity and hope you guys will read me over there. There is a direct link to my articles here. (What does this mean for Fire Brand? I’ll be moving to once a week on Fridays. Troy and Lee will step up to fill the void, and I’m honored to have such capable writers in place.) Be sure to bookmark both Fire Brand and NESN!
Randy Booth over at Over the Monster has decided to undertake the big quest to make his first Red Sox Annual. I have contributed some work to this and many other Red Sox bloggers/writers have done so as well. All content will be original work and I am looking forward to reading it.
Randy has asked for some of the readers help as well. Head over to the site and if you have graphic design experience you could help design the annual. They also are looking for fan’s to contribute their favorite moments in an essay format under 250 words.
You should be able to read the Annual in March at some point and it will be a PDF format for easy reading.
