Zach’s 2009 AL All-Star Roster

Written on July 3rd, 2009 by Zach Hayes46493 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/07/03/zachs-2009-al-all-star-roster.htmlZach%27s+2009+AL+All-Star+Roster2009-07-03+15%3A51%3A30Zach+Hayes

Since the American League is once again wholly superior (seriously, one could make the argument that any of the top four teams in the East could win four out of the other five divisions, the West being the exception with the Dodgers) and the league I know better than the back of my hand, here’s my best shot at devising what should be true the 2009 AL All-Star Game Roster complete with nine starting position players, six starting pitchers, six closers and 13 reserves:

TAM 5, BOS 3: Speed kills

Ex-NFL color commentator John Madden — not to be confused with Rays Manager Joe Maddon — always said speed kills. He wasn’t joking.

Green stellar at shortstop

Written on April 20th, 2009 by Evan Brunell42585 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/04/20/green-stellar-at-shortstop.htmlGreen+stellar+at+shortstop2009-04-20+12%3A00%3A00Evan+Brunell

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the Red Sox’s play in recent days has been the productivity of Nick Green, the new starting shortstop.

And while he’s hitting .278/.350/.333, eons better than his 241/.310/.347 line, that’s not the story here. No, the story is his fielding.

It’s looking more and more like Green may be worthy of the bench spot all season long, or at least until Jed Lowrie returns (fingers crossed). Even if he can’t hit, his defense out of the infield is valuable.

Know Thine Enemy 2009: Tampa Bay Rays

Written on April 2nd, 2009 by Evan Brunell41893 Commentshttp://firebrandal.com/2009/04/02/know-thine-enemy-2009-tampa-bay-rays.htmlKnow+Thine+Enemy+2009%3A+Tampa+Bay+Rays2009-04-02+12%3A00%3A00Evan+Brunell

The Tampa Bay Rays are coming off their first successful season in the history of the franchise. Finally, they’re not considered doormats with no vision of the future. Now the Pirates stand alone there. (Even the Royals are much improved!)

This club is scary in the pool of young talent they already hold plus more on the way in the minor leagues. The Rays will compete for a very, very long time. But will they be able to withstand the Red Sox and Yankees assault in 2009?
