For hitters, the depth chart reaches down to those that would be considered a fill-in in case of injury.

For pitchers, the ‘in reserve’ category on the depth chart are bullpen guys that could step in to start, plus Triple-A Pawtucket pitchers. The final category is self explanatory.

Bold indicates the player is on the 40-man roster.
Bold italics indicates the player is on the active roster. Only noted in-season.
An asterisk (*) next to a pitcher’s name indicates they are a left-handed pitcher.

DFA: Player is designated for assignment. Team has 10 days to option/waive to minors, release or trade player. Unless player is clearly done with Sox, any DFA’d player remains on Sox depth chart in the assumption they head to Triple-A.

In the off-season, a balance is struck between a team’s current depth chart and identifying spots that will be filled from an unknown player (noted as TBD — To Be Determined).

Update: Casey Kotchman is no longer the back up at 1st.
Boof Bonser will make this team when camp breaks. He needs to be up there somewhere.
Good depth chart format with the notables.
