This week Paul and Tim tap Fire Brand columnist and twitter extraordinaire Chip Buck to join the show and topics range from Josh Beckett to Nomar Garciaparra and back again. But it all seems to come back to the starting pitchers. If this season has shown us one thing, it’s that the Red Sox success hinges on the performances of their starters. The offense is, as usual, one of the best in baseball and the bullpen is more than adequate at the moment with Andrew Bailey and Mark Melancon waiting in the wings.

The crew takes on each of the starting five and with heavy hearts admits that there really isn’t any choice but to send Will Middlebrooks down to the minors when Kevin Youkilis returns. And hey — the Red Sox have won five in a row.

Didn’t we suffer through this enough last April? and then again last September? Do we really need to suffer through it again in 2012? There is a cloud of negativity around this team, from the front office to the players to the fans and in the media. Where does it all stem from? Can the 2012 Red Sox prevail despite this apparent mentality around the club and the slow start on the field? Will Manny Ramirez show up for the Fenway 100 celebration?
Major League Baseball’s revamped playoff system may have put the 2011 Red Sox in the post-season despite their horrific September, but even that won’t sway this panel of judges in favor of the changes put into effect for the 2012 playoffs. Paul and Tim are joined by esteemed Fire Brand columnist Chip Buck to tear apart the new playoff system one scenario at a time.

Bobby Valentine came to Boston with an expected short shelf life due to his lack of filter with the media. Has he already gotten himself into too much trouble than he’s worth? How about Josh Beckett’s comments to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com that baseball took a backseat priority to his family this past season and going forward? Some people have taken umbrage with that statement — but not this crew. Family should always come first, shouldn’t it? Do we expect too much from players sometimes?

The 2011 Red Sox outfield featured an epic season from their centerfielder but miserable performance from the corners. A rebounding Carl Crawford and a platoon in right field should offset any decline from their rising star. The 2012 outfield will be an upgrade over 2011.

With the breaking news that Bobby Valentine is indeed about to be announced as the 45th manager of the Boston Red Sox, Paul and Tim take to the airwaves with instant reaction. Unlike much of the media or the court of public opinion, the Fireside Chats crew is prepared to give Bobby V a chance to tell us who he is and what he has come to Boston to do. Both of our co-hosts agree that given the world of possible outcomes, Bobby Valentine certainly isn’t a bad one. Is he ultimately the right man for the job? We’ll just have to see…

What does the hiring of Valentine mean for Ben Cherrington and Larry Lucchino? What does the signing of Jonathan Broxton by the Royals to a one year, $4 million dollar deal say about Daniel Bard’s future? Will David Ortiz agree to arbitration and stay with the Red Sox for one more season?

All that and more on this episode of Fireside Chats.
