Another bullpen pitcher was acquired by the Red Sox today. Longtime Angel Brendan Donnelly, famously with safety glasses on the mound and hailing from independent baseball, is now a Boston Red Sox at the expense of Phil Seibel. Seibel made an amazing recovery from Tommy John Surgery to post a dominant minor league season for the Sox. This gives the Red Sox certainties in Donnelly, Hideki Okajima, Mike Timlin and Julian Tavarez. One has to assume Manny Delcarmen is a lock as well.
UPDATE: Former Angel (and Twin) J.C. Romero also joins Donnelly in the bullpen, inking a minor league deal with the Red Sox. After flaming out in Los Angeles (6.71 ERA) he had been a very capable reliever for the Twins, although inconsistent. His ERA year to year: 4.00, 7.11, 6.23, 1.89, 3.51, 3.47, 6.70. Assuming he wins a relief spot, that leaves one spot left for Kyle Snyder, Craig Hansen, Craig Breslow, Javier Lopez, Devern Hansack, Lenny DiNardo, Kason Gabbard or Rule 5 pick Nick DeBarr. Before factoring in we still need a closer.
