Theo Epstein has been fired from his post as general manager of the Red Sox.
Larry Lucchino e-mailed me this morning to break the news, saying that:

As a fan of independent media, I figured I’d let a Sox blog break the news before the Boston Globe and the Curly-Haired Boyfriend. We’ve fired my former protege, Theo Epstein. Epstein’s performance had slipped considerably in recent months. He turned down a Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, Jed Lowrie, Justin Masterson and Lars Anderson deal for Johan Santana. He didn’t sign Carlos Silva to a contract — we had the Mariners’ offer beat. Also, I think he was drinking on the job.

I immediately replied to him, asking who the new general manager would be. His response?

We’ve decided to bring back someone from the Red Sox’s halcyon days, Dan Duquette. What did Duquette accomplish while with the Red Sox? He only got the greatest pitcher of all time, Pedro Martinez, in a Red Sox uniform. No other candidates need apply.

Remember, you read it here first.
