The Red Sox have called up former touted prospect Chris Smith to fill the pitching void, optioning Jonathan Van Every. Smith, 27, has come a long way since his 2002 ATV accident, and at age 27, finally gets the call. A starter until 2007, he filled a swingman’s role for Triple-A Pawtucket to keep him stretched out, and he pitched impressively. Known for a style similar to Greg Maddux or Mike Mussina (SoxProspects.com), Smith has a knuckle-curve and has held batters to a .188 clip, walking only seven in 31.0 IP (10 G, 4 GS) for a 1.45 ERA.
