GAME NOTES: Game notes brought to you by Tessie’s Dad… [Ugh. Game Notes for a Wakefield start. I really should be more careful about which trivia questions I answer. Sorry, Evan, sponsor of St. Tim’s baseball-reference.com page, but here goes:] Tonight, the Sox send wizened veteran Tim Wakefield to the mound to oppose the Jay’s rookie lefthander Davis Purcey. On paper, Wakefield is the better pitcher, ahead of Purcey in ERA, WHIP and WPCT, but the game isn’t played on paper, and these two pitchers come into tonight’s game after remarkably different performances in their last starts. Wakefield should at least be well-rested, as he comes off a 1.2 IP, 7 ER, 49 pitch debacle against Texas. Maybe he’ll surprise us by living up to his reputation for bullpen-sparing endurance and last longer than 6.1 IP this time out, which would be an improvement over his season average in innings per start. Jays starter Purcey, on the other hand, shut out the Rays for eight innings in his last start; let’s hope he’s still plenty tired.
Now would be an excellent time to step up, Tim.
