Brad Mills and DeMarlo Hale will have to wait for another team. The Seattle Mariners will announce Athletics bench coach Don Wakamatsu as their new manager. Wakamatsu had been considered for previous openings such as the Texas Rangers and his own Athletics, but could never get the job done. He did this time.
While we’re here, what about John Farrell declining to interview with the Seattle Mariners? He seems intent on going into his third year as the Sox’s pitching coach. Have the Sox given him a handshake deal that he will succeed Terry Francona as manager? If so, I’m thrilled that Farrell is willing to stick it out.
If not, however, is he waiting for the right team? Is he waiting for a team that can compete and that’s not in shambles? May be smart of him. Too bad we’ll probably never find out, not until he becomes a manager or general manager, that is.
