David Pauley designated for assignment

David Pauley was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man spot. The Red Sox currently now have a full 40-man roster with the addition of John Smoltz and Takashi Saito.

Over three years, Pauley had a 9.53 ERA in the major leagues but sacked up big time with a thrilling assignment at Yankee Stadium in 2006. Sean O's reaction to that tough loss: "Pauley, the guy almost everyone thought would suck, throws an absolute gem, and loses because goddamn Seanez walks in Giambi? And then, when we're about to tie it up, a home run gets taken away by Melky Freaking Cabrera?"

Only 25, Pauley could have a decent major league career ahead of him but with his poor fastball, is better suited to the National League. He stands a good chance of clearing waivers and being outrighted to Pawtucket, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Pauley's former team, the San Diego Padres, claim him.

Not Sold on Montero

The Red Sox are balking at the idea of trading Bowden, but in the end I am not convinced he will be the reason the Sox do not get Montero. I'm not sold on that premise of Montero being the "catcher of the future".

2009 Hall of Fame: Rice, Rickey make the cut!

Update: Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice have both received the amount of votes needed to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Congrats to both former BoSox!

The 2009 Hall of Fame announced the results of its voting today at 1:30pm. Use this post to speculate on the voting leading up to its announcement, and commenting on the results from that point out. The 23 players on this year's ballot are the lowest number ever, with only 13 players returning from last year's ballot, also a record low. As you are probably aware, it is the last year on the ballot for Jim Rice to be elected from the Baseball Writers Association of America. The induction ceremonies will be on July 26th, 2009 in Cooperstown, NY.

We all know about Jim Rice, but how many of the 23 candidates for the 2009 Hall of Fame class spent part of their careers with the Boston organization? The answer might surprise you. Check the names and career statistics after the jump!

Sox’s recent additions don’t mean young pitchers will be dealt

The Boston Red Sox have made a few sensational low-cost, high-reward moves lately, bringing in Rocco Baldelli, Brad Penny, Takashi Saito and John Smoltz.

This has led several people to posit that the Red Sox may now be more amenable to dealing Michael Bowden, Clay Buchholz or Justin Masterson for a catcher such as Texas' Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Taylor Teagarden and Arizona's Miguel Montero.

Really?

Don't be so quick to assume the Sox may be more likely to ship out some of their younger pitching because of these deals.

Some Bullpen Projections

How good will the Red Sox bullpen be this year? Below are the averaged projections from CHONE, Bill James, and…

Give Jeff Bailey a chance

What Theo thinking signing Mark Kotsay? The idea that Kotsay improves this team is completely ridiculous.

Psycho for Saito

Ok, so Theo couldn't deliver Mark Teixeria, but he is on top of bringing in the high-ceiling, low-cost players.

Following in the footsteps of John Smoltz, Brad Penny and Rocco Baldelli comes Takashi Saito. The replacement of Eric Gagne (when he could actually pitch) for the L.A. Dodgers, is now the set-up man for Jonathan Papelbon.

Red Sox sign Saito!
