Tim Wakefield had lost 5 straight road games to the Los Angeles Angels. He looked well on his way to breaking that streak with a four run lead heading into the bottom of the third.
Mike Napoli made sure Wakefield’s streak extended to six games with one swing of the bat.
After Torii Hunter and Kendry Morales notched RBI singles, Napoli smashed a home run to center field for a 5-4 lead. Matt Palmer finished up the rest.
Palmer (4-0) went the distance, yielding four runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. He gave up a two-run shot to Jason Bay in the first inning, an RBI double by Nick Green and a RBI ground out to Jacoby Ellsbury.
One highlight for Boston was Daniel Bard’s MLB debut. Bard went two innings with one walk and one strikeout. He only allowed one hit.
Goat of the Game – Wakefield
Well on his way to a win, Wakefield squandered his four run lead allowing seven runs total on 11 hits over 4 2/3 innings pitched. He walked three, struck out two and gave up two long balls.
Next Game – 5/14 vs. Los Angeles Angels – Brad Penny/Ervin Santana
Santana makes his first start of the season for the Angels.
