Casey Janssen had been waiting a long time for this.
Janssen (1-1) won his first game as a starting pitcher since June 30, 2006 out dueling Tim Wakefield pitching seven innings, giving up 11 hits, three runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
Wakefield (6-3) suffered the loss yielding six runs over 4 2/3 innings pitched giving up nine hits. The knuckleballer walked four and struck out five.
Boston had their chances in this one especially in the first inning with the bases loaded but David Ortiz flew out to the warning track in center field with two outs.
Wakefield got into trouble in the fifth inning giving up five runs in the inning.
Goat of the Game – Wakefield
Not a good outing for Boston’s most consistent pitcher of the season so far.
Next Game – 5/30 vs. Toronto Blue Jays – Brad Penny/Brian Tallet
Penny’s last start against Toronto was a win. Penny went 6 2/3 innings, gave up nine hits, two runs, one walk and he struck out two batters.
