Bob Nightengale of USA Today says that Victor Martinez is about to become a Boston Red Sox. Ed Price confirms.
FOX Sports follows the gaggle of confirmations, saying it is not a three-team deal. The Sox will have to try to flip Adam LaRoche separately. Ed Price said the Marlins aren’t interested.
Martinez is a switch-hitting 30-year old that has split time between catcher and first base this year. He is hitting .284/.368/.464 on the year, but check his monthly OPS: 1.082, .881, .802, .530. Disturbing trend.
Will Carroll reports it’s for Clay Buchholz and additional pieces.
FOX Sports disagrees, saying: “the Red Sox did not include either right-hander Clay Buchholz nor right-hander Daniel Bard in the deal, according to a source.”
Mike Silva originally reported that Adam LaRoche is heading to the New York Mets. Ken Rosenthal just confirmed that, according to Silva.
Jonathan Mayo said the big name in the package headed to Cleveland is Nick Hagadone.
Mayo follows up, saying Masterson is part of the deal.
Heyman verifies no Buchholz.
Bob Nightengale says to pack up and go home: Martinez is a Sox.
Jon Heyman picks up the LaRoche thread, saying the Braves would be interested in bringing LaRoche back to town. Casey Kotchman has been a huge disappointment for them.
Tom Verducci on the MLB Network says Bryan Price is also headed to the Indians.
Gordon Edes says Adam LaRoche has been traded to the Atlanta Braves. Ed Price confirms.
Oddly enough, the Red Sox are getting incumbent first baseman Kotchman from the Braves for LaRoche. This was reported on WEEI and and tentatively confirmed by Heyman.
Tony Massarotti just said on NESN that the Braves and Red Sox are splitting the cost for LaRoche.
Bob Nightengale says that “Kotchman is staying put in Boston. They love him off the bench.”
Side speculation: Kotch is your starting 1B next year. Kotchman, Pedroia, Lowrie, Youkilis.
Dan Roche says Kotchman is staying put.
