UPDATE: WBZ and Amalie Benjamin are reporting that John Smoltz has been designated for assignment. Smoltz was a huge disappointment for the Sox, and I feel sad at this outcome. However, it had to be done. There is an empty roster spot for a reliever. It is not known who will fill it at this time. It is possible Lowrie will not hit the DL: his disabling has yet to be confirmed.
In an answer to the Sox’s need for pitching, the Red Sox have recalled Junichi Tazawa from Triple-A Pawtucket. Billy Traber was designated for assignment, while Jed Lowrie was placed on the 15-day disabled list [It is possible Lowrie will not hit the DL: his disabling has yet to be confirmed, with the removing of Smoltz, there is a roster spot available should Lowrie go on the DL] and infielder Chris Woodward was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. A quick run-through:
Tazawa: Remains to be seen if he will start or relieve. Made two starts in Triple-A after 18 in Double-A. Cumulative 2.55 ERA, 109.1 IP, 27 BB, 94 K.
Woodward: 33, you might remember him from his 1999-2004 time with the Toronto Blue Jays. From 2005-6, he was a Met. In 2007, he was a Brave, and missed all of 2008 as he plied his trade in the minors. He hit .239/.288/.254 for the Mariners this year in 67 at-bats and is strictly depth as he has played every position in his career.
