What should be done with our struggling DH? A guy that could have ended each and every game, seemingly, had he been given the opportunity just a few years back.
Now, he can’t hit himself out of a paper bag. And I mean a bag that is already ripped in half, tearing down the middle.
He still has a pretty good approach–taking pitches, working the count. But more of that seems to due to the fact that he realizes his bat ain’t what it used to be. So he compensates by being, or so it seems, just a little more passive.
His OPS by month
April: .623
May: .520
June: 1.062
July: .845
August: .340
As you can see, that isn’t acceptable.
Ortiz’s June was awesome, really awesome. But April was terrible. May was horrendous. July was okay. And August is putrid.
And since he doesn’t have anything else to offer, then the overall numbers are simply unacceptable. A DH has to hit better than this.
To put things in perspective, among DH’s with at least 200 plate appearances, Ortiz is dead last with a .304 wOBA. Dead last in ‘WAR.”
But this is nothing new to Red Sox fans. However, we all thought he was getting on track with that torrid June. But now he is simply wasting AB’s. AB’s that could be given to someone else.
David Ortiz is not hitting. Either drop him to seventh, or drop him completely, giving the At Bats to more deserving players, such as Mike Lowell for example.
