Boof Bonser wasn’t upset that he gave up two home runs.
The fact his surgically-repaired right shoulder and right groin strain felt fine was his primary concern.
Bonser allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings during a rehab start for the Pawtucket Red Sox in an International League game Thursday against the Rochester Red Wings.
Pawtucket beat Rochester, 11-3.
“The groin felt really good tonight,” Bonser said. “I’m still wearing my brace. I didn’t feel anything. The shoulder also felt okay.
“Who knows? We’ll wait and see tomorrow if there’s a problem.”
Bonser, who’s on Boston’s disabled list because of the groin strain, gave up six hits, walked two and struck out four.
He threw 43 of 76 pitches for strikes and topped out at 94 on McCoy Stadium’s radar gun.
After a scoreless first inning, Bonser was tagged for a two-out solo home run to right field by Jacques Jones.
Rochester’s Brock Peterson lined a 1-2 pitch with one out in the fourth into the left-field bullpen for another solo homer.
“I threw all of my pitches and didn’t have any problems,” Bonser said. “The two bombs that I have up, the location was bad, both were curveballs but I’ll still throw them again. They were strikes.
“If I throw them in the ground, who knows? Maybe I get a swing and miss or maybe I get a groundball. But they were strikes.”
Bonser was removed after allowing a one-out double in the fifth to Luke Hughes.
Joe Nelson, who relieved Bonser, served up an RBI double to Erik Lis. The run was charged to Bonser.
“What I need to work on is (throwing) more pitches and having more consistency,” Bonser said. “What happens next is up to Boston. It’s one of those things where I’ll have to wait and see how many innings I get in and go from there.”
Bonser missed all of last season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.
He was obtained from Minnesota on December 10, 2009 in exchange for a player to be named later.
“Overall, I got a lot out of it,” Bonser said of his rehab start. “That’s the first time I’ve pitched in cold weather since I’ve been back. Everything else was in Florida.
“It was good to get a little weather change and see how the shoulder reacted.”
The 11 runs were the most Pawtucket has scored in a home opener … Darnell McDonald came up a single short of hitting for the cycle … He was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI … Tug Hulett belted a two-run homer during a four-run third inning … Hulett was 3-for-5 with three RBI … The rehab “parade” continues on Saturday when Daisuke Matsuzaka makes a rehab start in a 1 p.m. game also against Rochester.
