Papelbon struggles as Bard dominates

Papelbon has gone from an elite closer to what appears to be a replacement level reliever in just a matter of a few seasons. This year his numbers have fallen off a cliff as his K/9 was always his best skill and even though his walks were going up he could still maintain strong numbers. This year though his K/9 has dropped all the way to 7.67. That's not going to get it done when your walking more than 3 batters every nine innings. Looking at his xFIP of 4.74 you can see he has actually been lucky so far this year. There aren't many signs for what is wrong though. His arm speed is as good as it has ever been and while his slider is a bit slower it has been his best pitch according to run values.

As Usual the Red Sox Need Help in the Bullpen

Even before Jonathan Papelbon blew a save on Wednesday night in Denver, the Red Sox needed help in the back end of the bullpen. Daniel Bard can not go two innings each game the Sox are leading in a close game in going into the eighth inning.

Both Papelbon and Hideki Okajima’s production have been trending downward over the past few seasons. Okajima’s K/BB ratio has fallen each since he arrived in Boston. He is becoming more of a situational reliever.

Poll: Has the novelty of Interleague Play worn off?

While the Red Sox have traditionally had great success against the National League and it has given fans events like Pedro and Manny's returns to Fenway as well as the ability to see great NL stars like Ubaldo Jimenez and Tim Lincecum, as we power through the grueling stretch of Interleague games one has to ask if the Commissioners' office should be making changes going forward? How do you feel about Interleague Play? Love it, like it or kill it?

June 19, 2010 - Boston, MA, United States - epa02212023 Fans hold signs greeting former Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez as he came to bat for his new team the Los Angeles Dodgers, at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, on 19 June 2010.
I've had the privilege of attending three major homecomings at Fenway Park. The first was Pedro Martinez's, in 2006 as a member of the Mets; he was enthusiastically welcomed, but his start that game foreshadowed the injury woes that have plagued him through the latter part of his career. The second was Nomar Garciaparra, just last season as a member of the A's; that appearance was a harbinger of the reconciliation that was to come during the 2009-2010 offseason. Then, Friday, I was in attendance at Manny Ramirez's return, his first since the 2008 trade that finally ended the ongoing soap opera that was his Boston career. The reception he received at Fenway was mixed, and a perfect metaphor for his Boston career, which featured tremendous highs alongside controversy, character assassination, and the bitterest of Boston goodbyes.

This will be my third 'numbers' article, focusing on long-time former Sox players - from Pedro to Nomar and now to Manny. This, in many ways, is the hardest to write, as Manny is the hardest of those players to encapsulate. I would argue that alongside Pedro and Nomar, no single player is more responsible for the current popularity and success of the Red Sox as Manny Ramirez, and yet very few former players are as reviled and hated. A stunning talent, Manny was just as often a frustrating presence, never quite allowing the kind of iconic treatment other Sox players have received. His relationship with his teammates, the media, and the town itself was often contentious, and his dedication and loyalty were often questionable, but his production was always astounding. His career in Boston highlights a division among fans - would we rather see a successful but unlikeable player, or a mediocre but loyal one? How much do things like morality, kindness, and selflessness matter in modern sports, and to what degree are we viewing Manny's career through those lenses?

6/22 Online Seats Game Thread: Rocky Road to Coors Field

After a clean sweep of the Dodgers, the Boston Red Sox look to continue their dominance while the interleague season lasts, sending Jon Lester to the hill against youngster Jhoulys Chacin, who is sporting a cool 4.00 ERA since replacing Jorge de la Rosa in the Colorado Rockies rotation.

Looking for Buchholz strikeouts

June 20, 2010 - Boston, MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES - epa02213687 Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz pitches against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, 20 June 2010.
There are a few reasons why Clay Buchholz has outperformed his FIP and xFIP this season. He has been very lucky so far to currently have 10 wins and a 2.47 ERA. Coming into the season he had only Bill James and the fans projections on Fangraphs calling for an ERA under 4.00, but so far while his ERA has beat all the projections his strikeout rate continues to fall. In the minors Buchholz showed an elite strikeout ability getting over 12 K/9 in Triple-A, but after his promotion in 2007 his numbers had started to drop. Even after a return to the minors to figure things out he only broke a 10 K/9 for a short stay in Double-A. His K/9 fell to 8.53 in a return to the majors in 2008 and while lower still showed a solid skill for the strikeout.
