Last week’s poll generated some awesome discussion/debate. With over 550 votes cast, it’s clear that there are two particular areas that Red Sox Nation would like to see upgraded.
Starting pitcher 36% – This may have become even more prevalent with the struggles of Andrew Miller and Tim Wakefield. I would agree with the majority on this one. If there is one position to go after, it would be a starter.
Right field 29% – Josh Reddik’s AVG has dropped almost .100 points in the last 10 days, but no one is going to hit over .400 for an extended period of time anyway. Now, Carl Crawford returns to the Sox lineup, which means Reddick might see a drop in playing time, but he may end up stealing more at-bats away from J.D. Drew than Drew would like. Still, going forward with the duo of Reddick and Drew is a bit risky given Reddick’s lack of a track record and Drew’s overall futility at the plate. Did someone say the Mets were willing to eat all of Carlos Beltran‘s salary?
Bullpen arm 12% – This is where the drop-off occurs. I think the bullpen struggles are certainly noteworthy, but I also think Sox fans recognize that adding a starting pitcher or everyday player would be more valuable in the scheme of things.
Nothing, this team is fine as-is 12% – I could get on board with this. The Sox are, after all, in first place despite the injuries to the rotation and lack of production in right field. If Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz can get back and stay healthy, their impact alone would be a huge boost.
Shortstop 10% – The combination of Marco Scutaro and Jed Lowrie looked like a good one when the season started. Now, however, Lowrie is injured and Scutaro looks like the aging player that he is. Still, Scutaro is holding his own defensively and has a better than league average OBP.
Catcher 2% – The combination of Jason Varitek and Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been a pleasant surprise. While I have some worries about V-Tek’s stamina down the stretch, the youth and progression of Salty should counteract any big regression from V-Tek.
Seeing that the majority who voted want the Sox to trade for a starting pitcher, this week’s poll asks you to get a bit more specific. What pitcher do you want? Head on over to the right side bar and cast your vote!
