GAME NOTES

The Red Sox may have the best offense in MLB, Seattle may have the worst.  The Red Sox lead the league in BA, OBP, SLG, OPS and runs scored.  The Mariners are last in each of those categories.  Even Ichiro is having a tough year, hitting only .267/.313/.318 compared to his career line of  .327/.372/.423.

Today’s starting pitcher, Blake Beavan was acquired by the Mariners from the Rangers in last summer’s Cliff Lee deal.  He is only 22 and made his mojar league debut on July 3.  He currently projects as solid back of the rotation starter at this point in his career.

PLAYER OF THE DAY

The Seattle Mariners were enfranchised as a team in 1977.  On May 8, 1977 at Fenway the Red Sox and Mariners played their first game against each other.  Rick Wise started that game for the Red Sox.  Unfortunately, Wise didn’t last very long; he was taken out in the first after allowing 5 runs and getting only one out.  The Red Sox eventually lost that game 10-8.  Wise had a solid career through appearing in 506 games over 18 seasons with Phillies, Red Sox, Cardinals, Indians and Padres going 188-181 with a 3.69 ERA.
