According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have released veteran right handed starting pitcher Kevin Millwood.
Millwood started the season in the Yankee farm system before being granted his release on May 1st. The Red Sox signed him to a minor league deal on May 19th to add depth to their rotation options, and immediately assigned him to AAA Pawtucket. Plagued by diminished velocity and inconsistent command, he quickly fell out of the big club’s plans. With better options available as replacement starters in Andrew Miller, Kyle Weiland, and Alfredo Aceves; it made little sense for the Red Sox to hold onto the aging veteran.
In 16 minor league starts he went 7-2 with a 4.36 ERA and a 76/31 K/BB ratio in 89-2/3 innings during his 2011 minor league stint.
