The World Series is over and the hot stove season is underway. Now we get to fantasize about what big-name players could be coming to Boston in 2012.

I’m excluding Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder right off the bat, since, well, there’s this Adrian Gonzalez fella at first and he’s pretty good. The Sox have picked up Marco Scutaro’s 2012 option and stated that he will enter camp as the starting shortstop. This move hints that the Sox will not be players for Jose Reyes or Jimmy Rollins this winter.

The other top options have been posted in the poll. Head on over to the right sidebar to cast your vote>>>>>>

P.S. Though Yu Darvish may or may not be posted, he’ll be heavily linked to the Red Sox nonetheless, so he makes the list. I’ve also omitted David Ortiz and Jonathan Papelbon, as they were featured in last week’s poll.

Last week we asked…

What Player do the Sox NEED to Bring Back?

  • Jonathan Papelbon (42%, 142 Votes) – Given the state of the bullpen, I get this sentiment. Still, I have to wonder how wise it would be to hand a reliever upwards of $12 million.
  • David Ortiz (31%, 106 Votes) – Clearly Ortiz made a tremendous adjustment last season, cutting down on his strikeouts and mashing lefties. However, at age 36 and with little to no defense or base running value, a regression at the plate would kill his value.
  • Marco Scutaro (club & player option) (17%, 56 Votes) – Option picked up. Starting shortstop in 2012.
  • Erik Bedard (5%, 17 Votes) – While it would be unwise to expect much more than 150 innings from Bedard, he has proven that he can put up excellent numbers when able to toe the rubber.
  • J.D. Drew (3%, 9 Votes) – Thanks for the memories.
  • Jason Varitek (1%, 5 Votes) – Thanks for the memories.
  • Tim Wakefield (1%, 2 Votes) – Thanks for…man, this team was old.
