Evan Drellich is reporting that the Red Sox will promote Christian Vazquez from Triple-A on Friday after one year of recovery from Tommy John Surgery. It’s unclear at this point if any move will be made regarding Blake Swihart or Ryan Hannigan since the team has an available spot after Rusney Castillo was sent to Triple-A yesterday.
How they will rotate the group is going to be interesting, but it would seem that Hannigan is the odd man out even if he does stay on the roster. The other option is to test Swihart at other positions, but the obvious choices at third base or first base are filled right now very well with Travis Shaw and Hanley Ramirez.
This is good news although even with the reputation on defense that Vazquez has I can’t see him being a sudden fix for Clay Buchholz or Joe Kelly. Although if he works well with the pitchers it might take a bit of time to see that really work out.
