Since the recall, Gasper leads all of baseball, not just the Red Sox, in OBP, SLG, OPS, ISO and wRC+. Boston called him up because Masataka Yoshida and then Willson Contreras got hurt. Now he’s outproducing Aaron Judge’s rate stats on a nightly basis.
It gets weirder. One analyst pointed out that Gasper’s OPS over any 16-game stretch is the best by a Red Sox hitter since 2010:

That’s the whole story in one screenshot. A part-time first baseman is out-homering one of the sport’s best players over the same stretch, and it’s not close on a rate basis.
Boston’s rotation has needed saving all summer, even while the front office’s turnaround has been the bigger story. For three weeks now, the lineup has been saved by someone nobody saw coming: a guy who was a roster afterthought back in July.
Nobody thinks .378 with a 1.000 slug holds up. Not even Gasper thinks that.
September was supposed to be about running out the clock. Instead, the most must-watch at-bat in Boston belongs to a guy almost nobody outside his own family expected to be here.
Regression can wait its turn.
