This past Thursday night I was invited to the 2011 debut of this year’s Red Sox Charity Wines. For this season the players with wines are Jon Lester with the new CabernAce and Clay Buchholz with ChardonClay. This really is a great idea run by LongBall Cellars through the CharityWines.com organization. No player pictured earns any money as 100% of proceeds goes to the player’s selected charity.
First up was the CabernAce with Jon Lester pictured on the front and his chosen charity was The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, one of the many places involved in his treatment and eventual cure.
The Hutchinson Center has specialized in targeted immunotherapies to help the body fight off cancer on its own. They are a non-profit organization and help research some ground-breaking treatments for cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases.
The other wine this year is from Clay Buchholz who is currently the co-captain of the Jimmy Fund charity along with Tim Wakefield. It was an obvious choice for him as all proceeds from the ChardonClay will go to the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
I don’t think I need to say to much about the Jimmy Fund or Dana-Farber to Red Sox fans here. This charity is very close to all of us and does great work. As someone who works in cancer drug development it was a good night to see so much work being done by these players to help people with this disease.
The wines are good, but I’m not much of a wine connoisseur. Here is a review from the wine club selector who gave a previous years wine a very good review. Combine that with a great charity and make sure to buy plenty this year.
The wines are available starting sometime this month at most liqueur stores in the New England area. Each bottle retails for $14.00 and for those outside of the New England area you can order at the CharityWines.com website.
