GAME NOTES
One game left on this road trip, one game left of interleague and one game left of the Adrian Gonzalez in right field debate. Though we all hope that this debate is revisited, oh around the middle to end of October. Nice, solid win last night for the Red Sox. The offense exploded for 10 runs and was backed by solid pitching. It was nice to contributions up and down the lineup (I’m looking at you Darnell McDonald). At least on paper, today’s pitching match-up would lead you to believe that today’s game will be more of the same. Josh Beckett vs. Jordan Lyles seems to heavily favor the Red Sox but games are played on the field not paper.
INJURY REPORT
Boston: Clay Buchholz, lower back strain (Placed on the 15-day DL on June 19, retroactive to June 17); Carl Crawford, strained left hamstring (Placed on the 15-day DL June 18); Jed Lowrie, right shoulder injury (Placed on the 15-day DL on June 17)
Houston: Jason Bourgeois, strained right quad (Placed on the 15-day DL June 29); Humberto Quintero, high ankle sprain (Placed on the 15-day DL May 28)
PLAYER OF THE DAY
On July 3, 1952 the Red Sox signed amateur free agent pitcher Arnold Earley. Earley made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 1960 appearing in only two games (4 innings) on the season. He remained a member of the Red Sox until he was traded to the Atlanta Braves following the 1965 season. The Braves then flipped him to the Chicago Cubs just a few weeks later. Earley appeared in 208 games over his Red Sox career going 10-19 with a 4.45 ERA. He pitched one year for the Cubs and completed his career with today’s opponent, the Houston Astros in 1967.
