On the heels of Joe Veno’s article on the prospective DH options we ask you what you think about what the Red Sox should do about the DH spot.
Stick with David Ortiz ’till the wheels fall off: Simple here, with everything he has given us in the last few years, is he deserving of an chance to right his ship and give us a second half like he did last season?
Hand over the keys to Mike Lowell: Mike Lowell has carried his own with the bat this season, which begs the question — if Lowell is healthy why not let him be the man? and if he is needed in the field, then just shift Papi (assuming he is still here, or another bench player).
Using a rotating DH spot: This one leaves it a bit more open — the Sox have has some great performances out of the bench players they have, realistically Jason Varitek, Jeremy Hermida, Bill Hall, Lowell, and Ortiz could all just rotate through, as well as anyone in the field who is banged up and could use a day to relax a bit, but still get swings in.
Or lastly, blow the whole thing up and start over: If the Red Sox were to trade for a catcher (moving Victor Martinez as the DH) or bringing in an Adrian Gonzalez type (using Lowell, Youk, Adrian Beltre as needed).
As for our previous poll: What is the biggest story from the Red Sox first month of the season?
David Ortiz’ struggles – 13 percent
The injuries to Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron. – 17 percent
Jason Varitek’s performance in a back-up role. – 7 percent
The pitching inconsistencies. – 58 percent
Darnell McDonald – 5 percent
Its obvious that the voice of the nation is about the pitching — a situation that is hopefully improving with the recent performances of Jon Lester and Clay Bucchholz. In addition to that, the absence of Papi’s bat, as well as the physical absence of both Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury.
