Should Sox trade Delcarmen for Nick Johnson?

MLB: APR 13 Phillies at Nationals
Peter Gammons went on Mike and Mike's ESPN Radio show this morning. Thanks to Hacks with Haggs, there is a transcript of the proceedings. An interesting tidbit:
Washington with their 2-16 bullpen are trying to move Nick Johnson and Austin Kearns and some of their semi-attractive veteran players to get relief pitchers. I know they offered Nick Johnson to Boston for Manny Delcarmen. That hasn't happened and may not until the Red Sox make a decision on David Ortiz.
This is a deal the Red Sox would instantly do if Big Papi was at his current level of production on July 31.

It's May 22, however.

It still begs the question: should the Red Sox do the trade? If so, when?

Foulke speaks on comeback attempt, Schilling

Orioles v Red Sox
Stan Grossfeld of the Boston Globe interviewed Keith Foulke in a piece that ran today. I enjoy Grossfeld's feature pieces -- they're enjoyable to read, and this one is no exception. It's great to hear from Foulke, and I'll always consider his 2004 postseason effort unmatched by any reliever.

Foulke lost his closer's job in 2005 amid injuries. He stuck as a solid middle reliever for the Sox in 2006, then signed with the Cleveland Indians before retiring in spring training due to injuries. He could have stuck it out and collected his money, but chose not to. He then came back with the Athletics last year, again being a solid reliever. No calls occurred this winter, so he's up in Newark, pitching for an independent team that has Carl Everett at DH.

Let's take a look at what he had to say.

5/17: Evening, sirs

This is probably Masterson's final start before he goes back to the bullpen to make room for Daisuke Matsuzaka. Vargas will try to continue his hot streak, but isn't particularly any good.

TRIVIA: Postseason wins

How many times have the Red Sox won their final postseason game?

When is enough for David Ortiz?

MLB: AUGUST 02 Athletics v Red Sox
This is a situation that I was not too eager to broach, but now that it's the halfway mark into May and the home run total by David Ortiz matches my career total, it's time.

When do the Red Sox make a change with David Ortiz?

The way I see it, there are two options, both of which belong to David Ortiz. Make no mistake: at some point, probably soon, the Red Sox will come to Ortiz and say the situation has reached a head.

TRIVIA: Morse Code

What is the message inscribed in Morse Code on the manual scoreboard in left field at Fenway?

Are the Sox starters as bad as they seem?

Sports - September 07, 2007
At what point can the Red Sox wait to address their AL-worst starting corps (or should I say corpse?), second-last in the bigs with a 5.81 ERA? Even the Yankees are faring better with a 5.64 ERA.

It's a testament to how good the offense and bullpen is that the Sox are hanging around first place. Once the starters start regressing to the norm, the club will be that much more stronger.

Interest in baseball rises in Europe

In advance of the Baseball World Cup (yes, there is one, independent of the World Baseball Classic that MLB does not allow its players to participate in) in September, Europe is seeing a spike in popularity...
