With the news that Julio Lugo is undergoing arthroscopic surgery tomorrow, the question becomes who is going to pick up the slack. Lugo may return in time for Opening Day... he could return a few days after... or his injury could be worse than currently thought.
Either way, the backup infield job is now officially a competition. If healthy, Jed Lowrie and Lugo are the two victors... but who could the job fall to if Lugo can't make it back in time? Let's look at the four candidates.
Dustin Pedroia strained a muscle near his ribcage during Team USA workouts on Friday. It's not anything to be concerned about, but this next piece of news is.
Julio Lugo may have torn his meniscus in his knee and word is he will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday. He'd be sidelined a month, leaving the starting shortstop job to Jed Lowrie. That's probably the outcome we all hoped for, but losing Lugo as a backup is tough.
Nick Green, Gil Velazquez, Ivan Ochoa and Angel Chavez will all compete for the backup job. So far, Green has to be winning the job -- he's hitting .387/.472/.645 and has a reputation as a solid gloveman.
The popular Red Sox (and sports?) story today is going to be Jonathan Papelbon coming out with both barrels aflame at one Manuel Aristides Ramirez. Read on to hear Papelbon's quotes and my reaction...

Stan Grossfeld of the Boston Globe had a great profile on Bryce Harper, a 16-year old baseball player who has already hit a 570' home run. No way the Sox have the first pick in 2011 to pick him (fingers crossed), but it's nice to hear. The only problem is that he would like to be a Yankee too. No, Bryce, NO!
"I've always wanted to put on the pinstripes," he says. "But I absolutely love Boston. I'd play anywhere, even Kansas City."
Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT, Evan Brunell will be chatting Red Sox with the

The Sox may end up thanking their stars that they didn't pull the trigger on a trade for one of the Texas Triangle catchers because Joe Mauer could be donning red socks as soon as this July.
Mauer, an impending free agent after 2010, will command a contract with a salary range between $20-$25 million, reported Nick Cafardo yesterday.
Slated to turn 26 on April 19, Mauer would be one of the most sought after players should he land in the free agent market with both the Red Sox, New York Yankees and other teams bidding for his services.
