Free Agent Frenzy 2009

I assume at least some of you know about the Free Agent Frenzy -- a game that MLB.com rolls out where you predict where 15 top free agents sign and the confidence level you have of that. You get Opening Day tickets if you win. Here's my ballot:

Youkilis named AL’s best hitter; is he for real?

In fan voting, Kevin Youkilis was tabbed the AL's best hitter, an honor formerly bestowed on such luminaries like Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez.

The official title of the award is the Hank Aaron award, and it comes on the heels of Youk's MVP-caliber (career?) season, a season in which he led the AL in RBI per at-bats (one for each 4.7).

Is Kevin Youkilis another Edgar Martinez? Or will he become another Nomar Garciaparra? Is he destined to flame out quickly or will he enjoy another decade of production?

Rooting for the Phillies to win it all

In terms of heartache and passion for sports, Philadelphia doesn't just beat Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg, it annihilates it.

To me, I find it more important to give a tortured city and franchise a championship on which to hang their hats on.

RED SOX ROUNDTABLE: Who should we bring in?

In this edition of the Red Sox roundtable, four Red Sox bloggers give their opinion on who the Red Sox should sign as a free-agent. Who would your pick be?

Notes: Josh Beckett, Derek Lowe, Texas catchers

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels confirmed the Red Sox approached the Rangers in July about two catchers. Expect the Red Sox to make overtures again.

Apparently not only was Derek Lowe interested in Boston, Boston was interested in Lowe.

Josh Beckett apparently "struggled" to put his shirt on prior to the game and would have needed another cortisone shot had the Red Sox advanced.

Shutterfly TRIVIA: Body part names

Who is/ was the only Red Sox player who held the distinction of every syllable of his name being a body part?

Hand Lowrie that starting job

One plotline throughout this offseason will be the question of what will happen at shortstop: will the Red Sox install rookie Jed Lowrie into the role or go back to injured, mega-bust Julio Lugo?

Schilling blasts Manny

Curt Schilling's latest entry on his blog, 38pitches.com, was very, very interesting. It has been removed from 38pitches.com, but the text still comes through on my RSS reader. I have quoted a few relevant excerpts and provided the full text for you.

Shutterfly TRIVIA: Jason’s #33

Jason Varitek didn't always wear #33 for the Red Sox. It took him two years to get his coveted number. What did he wear prior to #33?
