Daisuke’s First 100 Innings
It’s hats-off time to Boston’s favorite failure, Daisuke Matsuzaka, for eclipsing the 100 IP mark this season -- and doing so in commendable fashion.Perhaps “Boston’s favorite failure” is a bit harsh on the man, but it’s difficult to separate his past four seasons from the other-worldly expectations following his acquisition leading up to the 2007 season.
But that’s a separate discussion -- and ongoing one since at least 2008, when he was walking 5.05 batters per nine innings -- and not the topic of this post.

Showing Aces
The promise of this season, coming in, was pitching and defense. Instead, to this point we've seen a team riddled with injuries and dependent more on their offense -- despite a recent lull, the team is still second only to the Yankees in all of baseball with 521 runs scored -- than their bottom-third defense (tenth in the AL at 444 runs scored). Much of that blame has to be placed on the injuries to Beckett, Buchholz, Wakefield, and Matsuzaka; the mediocre performance from Lackey; and the the at-times awful bullpen contribution. However, things appear to be looking up for the pitching staff: Beckett and Buchholz have both recently returned to action with strong outings, while Matsuzaka and Lackey seem to be hitting their strides. Shoring up the starting rotation would be a tremendous improvement for this team, but would it be enough?

Now that the holiday weekend is over, the Boston Red Sox's will fly south to Tampa to take on the Rays, sending Daisuke to the mound once again.
The Offense Has Carried The Club And Now It Is the Rotation’s Turn
As the Red Sox world turns, it is reflecting more and more like a general hospital. On a daily basis another player is heading to the disabled list. The Olde Towne Team needs to keep their collective heads above water until the starters get back on the diamond. The good play since April allows the Red Sox the opportunity to stay in the race even with numerous key players in the training room. The Red Sox offense is mostly responsible for the May and June resurgence. They lead the American League in runs scored, are second in on-base percentage and first in slugging percentage. The incredible turnaround of David Ortiz and the unconscious Adrian Beltre at the plate have been two that have performed beyond expectations.
