The Boston Red Sox have claimed 24-year old reliever J.D. Durbin off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Durbin’s only appearance with the D’backs occured last week when he gave up seven earned runs in 2/3s of an inning against the Colorado Rockies.
Durbin has a major league arm, but still needs seasoning in Triple-A. Rotoworld.com is high on his future.
Durbin, a former Minnesota Twin, last saw time in the majors in 2004, when he was 22. He threw 7.1 IP of six earned run ball.
Last year, Durbin started 16 games for the Triple-A Rochester club, hurling 83.2 IP of a 2.33 ERA, striking 81 out, walking 50. His WHIP was 1.31.
Durbin is expected to be activated for Tuesday’s home opener (Javier Lopez sent down) and then immediately waived after the game for Mike Timlin’s activation, at which time the Red Sox hope he gets through waivers. The Red Sox had lost their previous claim to Durbin, who had then been awarded to the Diamondbacks.
