After striking out Jose Vidro in the fourth inning something seemed wrong with Boston Red Sox (48-27) starter Julian Tavarez. Coming down off the mound, Tavarez limped and skipped and the ending result of that apparent injury was a five-run fifth inning for the Seattle Mariners (40-33) who eventually won 9-4.
That fifth inning was long and painful for Tavarez who committed a throwing error on a sacrifice hit by Yuniesky Betancourt that moved Adrian Beltre who earlier doubled to deep center. Willie Bloomquist knocked an RBI single and Ichiro Suzuki walked loading the bases. Jose Lopez singled to left bring the score to 4-2.
Kyle Snyder later relieved Tavarez in the inning and walked two runners home that were both inherited from Tavarez giving the Mariners a 6-2 lead they never looked back on.
Tavarez (5-5) only went 4.1 innings pitched, giving up six hits, six runs, three earned, three walks, and one strikeout in his shortest outting of the season.
While Tavarez struggled so did the Sox lineup who scored their first two runs on a throwing error by Lopez that scored Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo in the third inning.
