Stephen Drew to Boston? Yes, please

Stephen Drew of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
I know, I know... we need to stay focused on 2009. The Sawx need to do what they can to win the World Series. Even after a demoralizing series to the Yankees, I feel the team has a great chance of picking up that crown. However... we gotta talk about 2010.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today said that the Diamondbacks plan on shopping shortstop Stephen Drew, with the Red Sox expected to make contact. 'Zona will seek pitching.

Drew's age 26 season has been solid for a shortstop: .258/.321/.432. However, coming off his .291/.333/.502 line from 2008, the year has been marked a disappointment. Having someone who can hit that as a base, though, with the potential for more is awesome.

Sox pitching coach John Farrell unable to manage in 2010

Well, some good news after a dreary weekend. John Farrell is reportedly unable to take a managerial job until after 2010. While it's not in doubt Farrell will one day manage -- and/or be a general manager -- having Farrell around for at least one more year will prove crucial, especially as this offseason figures to be a watershed one for the franchise.

NYY 4, BOS 2 – Sox Lose Early Lead as Yanks Complete Sweep

The Yankees completed their three-game sweep of the Red Sox on Sunday by virtue of a 4-2 victory in the Bronx.

The Sox got off to a quick start, striking first in the opening frame, and extending their lead to 2-0 in the third. The Yanks posted the next four runs, however, including home runs by Mark Teixeira (38) and Melky Cabrera (13).

Paul Byrd was the hard luck loser in today's match, throwing 5.2 innings before being chased in the sixth after two two-out singles. Takashi Saito came in for relief, but provided little, as he allowed both inherited runners to score on a Hideki Matsui single...

Scouting report on prospect Seth Schwindenhammer

One month prior to this year's draft, outfielder Seth Schwindenhammer gave what the Boston Red Sox hope is a premonition of things to come.

While playing in the second annual Statewide Showdown in Bartonville, Ill., Schwindenhammer led his Limestone Community High team to a 10-1 romp over Peoria Notre Dame by going 3-for-4 including two home runs - one a grand slam - and finishing with seven RBI.

NYY 3, BOS 0 – Sabathia Unhittable, Sox Fall

On Saturday night, the Sox-Yanks rivalry added another thrilling match to their dossier.

The game was hotly contested for the first seven innings. The game was scoreless through 5 ½, before the Yankees broke through in the sixth on a Robinson Cano homer to left : NYY 1, BOS 0.

The Yankees added two more on a bloop single with two-outs in the eighth. Wagner placed a fastball on the inside corner, but Damon got just enough on it to bloop it over Pedroia's head.

9/26: Big money pitchers

GAME NOTES: A huge test on if Dice can be trusted ... ok, he can't ever be trusted this season, so let me modify... A huge test on if Dice can be somewhat trusted in the playoffs will come with his performance against the Yankees. If the dam breaks, it won't be pretty. On the other side, we have to deal with their big dog, CC Sabathia.

Stick a fork in Jason Varitek

Cincinnati Reds v Boston Red Sox
If Friday night's game didn't convince you that Jason Varitek's time as a starting catcher has passed him by, I've got a fantastic house with a view of the ocean for you in Wyoming.

On the year, Varitek's given up 107 stolen bases while catching only 15, for a god-awful 12% success rate. The last time hitters stole more than 81 stolen bases off of Varitek was in 1999-2000, in full swing of the anti-stretch policy that Joe Kerrigan endorsed. But back then, he was able to catch runners 27 and 25 percent of the time, respectively. Huge difference.

Varitek's arm has simply abandoned him. The game should bring clarity to the fact that 'Tek can't gun them out anymore.
