GAME NOTES

With the loss last night, the Red Sox record on the road dropped to 30-20, a .600 winning percentage.  But dropped is a relative term.  Over the past few years, one of the knocks on the Red Sox has been that, for whatever reason, they have not been a very good road team.
2010: 43-38 .531
2009: 39-42 .481
2008: 39-42 .481
2007: 45-36 .556
The glaring years are obviously 2009 and 2008 when the Red Sox were under .500 on the road. Traditionally, Fenway has been very friendly to the Red Sox and that has continued this year, they own a .622 winning percentage at home.  If that can be sustained as well as the higher road winning percentage, we may be in for a special year. If the Red Sox do continue the .600 pace on the road for the rest of the season, it would be the team’s highest winning percentage on the road since 2002 when they went a pretty amazing 51-31, .630 away from Boston.

PLAYER OF THE DAY

In recent years, whenever the Red Sox play at Camden Yards, there has been a mass exodus of Red Sox fans to Baltimore.  Camden Yards opened in 1992 and the Red Sox played their first game there on June 8th; Mike Gardiner started that game for the Red Sox.  Gardnier was in his second year with the Red Sox having been acquired in a trade from Seattle on April 1, 1991.  Following the 1992 season, the Red Sox traded Gardiner to the Expos for Ivan Calderon.  Gardiner had a 6-year career, appearing in 136 games, 46 starts.  He went 17-27 with a 5.21 ERA.  Gardiner made his final major league appearance in 1995 with Detroit.
